About Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence)

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) also known as male impotence is the inability to get and maintain an erection that is sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. This can vary in degrees, some sufferers cannot get an erection at all; others get one but it is not firm enough to penetrate the partner; and others can manage penetration for short time, but then lose it.
ConsultaDoc’s registered doctors can prescribe treatment for you Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra if appropriate, and our legal online pharmacy Click2Pharmacy can dispense the medication and deliver it safely and discreetly.
Erectile dysfunction is characterised by the regular or repeated inability to obtain or maintain an erection.
ED is a very common condition, particularly in older men. It is estimated that half of all men between the ages of 40 to 70 will have some degree of ED.
ED can have a range of causes that can be both physical and psychological (mental).
Physical causes include:
- Surgery – such as prostrate surgery which may have caused some damage to nerves or structure.
- Narrowing of blood vessels going into the penis – This is commonly associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a condition called diabetes.
- Other causes – there are some uncommon causes such as hormonal problems, which your doctor can discuss with you in more depth.
There are certain risk factors that may result in narrowing of blood vessels possibly leading to ED:
- Smoking
- Excessive drinking of alcohol
- Overweight/obese
- Use of recreational (illegal) drugs
- Performance anxiety
- Stress
- Depression
- Psychological problems
- Negative feelings (guilt)
ED can have a significant impact on both your quality of life and your partner’s. However, in many cases, it can be treated.
Certain lifestyle changes such have stopping smoking, exercise, healthy eating and reducing stress can make vast improvements. If the problem is psychological, counselling may help.
ConsultaDoc always recommends to get your condition investigated thoroughly by you regular doctor. It is often an early sign of narrowing blood vessels which could lead to strokes, heart attacks and coronary heart disease. ED could also be sign of underlying conditions such as diabetes and blood pressure. Simple tests can be done by your GP to check this.
Various types of treatments are available depending on the cause of ED. ConsultaDoc carries out consultations for three different medicines for the treatment of erectile dysfunction:
They are known as Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors and are one of the most widely used and effective types of medication for treating ED. They work by temporally increasing the blood flow to your penis.
These medications are Prescription Only Medication (POM) and should only be prescribed by a registered doctor.
If it is your first time using these treatments, it is probably better to try the lower strength medicines first.
